Angels are ranked into nine choirs, or categories, and divided into three hierarchies: seraphim, cherubim and thrones; dominations, virtues and powers; principalities, archangels and angels.

Angels
The highest orders are noted for their zeal and ceaseless contemplation of God Those in the second hierarchy are associated with the care of human affairs, and the lowest ranks are charged with announcing God's will.

Reigning at the top of this spectrum, existing in the realm closest to God, are the seraphim, characterized by their fiery love, which is said to reflect onto the lesser ranks of angels.
Seraphim -These are the highest order or choir of angels. They are the angels who are attendants or guardians before God's throne. They praise God, calling, "Holy Holy Holy is the Lord of Hosts". the only Bible reference is Isaiah 6:1-7. One of them touched Isaiah's lips with a live coal from the altar, cleansing him from sin. Seraphim have six wings, two cover their faces, two cover their feet, and two are for flying.
Cherubim are associated with intellect. They share a deep insight into God's secrets and understand the requirements of salvation.Cherubim rank after the seraphim and are the second highest in the nine hierarchies or choirs of angels. The Old Testament does not reveal any evidence that the Jews considered them as intercessors or helpers of God. They were closely linked in God's glory. They are manlike in appearance and double-winged and were guardians of God's glory. They symbolized then, God's power and mobility.
In the New Testament, they are alluded to as celestial attendants in the Apocalypse (Rv 4-6). Catholic tradition describes them as angels who have an intimate knowledge of God and continually praise Him.
Thrones-Also known as the Ophanim, these angels serve the primary function of being God's chariot. But besides this, they are also noted as being the dispensers of God's judgment; acting with impartialness and humility to bring about the desires of the Lord. Having the most bizarre physical appearance of the celestial host, they are described a great wheels, covered with a great many eyes and glowing with light. One explanation given for this (besides them acting as God's chariot), is that they mark the end of the first Choir, where the emanations of God begin to take on more material forms and as such exist in a state of transition.
symbolize submission and peace, and they help people to abide by God's will. By tradition, God rests on them and imparts His Spirit, which they pass on to lesser angels and to mankind.
The second hierarchy is led by the dominations, who rule over lesser angels to carry out commands of God and make known God's authority.
Virtues fulfill this work and, through them, God oversees the seasons and visible heavens.
The Powers, by tradition, are the favorite of mortals, assigned to fight evil spirits and defeat their plans.
Principalities rule over the lowest hierarchy, guarding countries and charged with making announcements to mankind. They govern souls and bodies. In the New Testament Principalities refers to one type of spiritual (metaphysical) being which are now quite hostile to God and human beings. (Rom 8:38; 1 Cor 15:24; Eph 1:21; 3:10; 6:12; Col 1:16; 2:10, 15) Along with the principalities are the powers (Rom 8:38; 1 Cor 15:24; Eph 1:21; 1 Pt 3:22; 2 Thes 1:7); and cosmological powers (1 Cor 15:24; Eph 1:21; 3:10; Col 2:15);Dominions (Eph 1:21; Col 1:16) and thrones (Col 1:16). The clarity of the New Testament witness helps see that these beings were created through Christ and for Him (Col 1:16). Given their hostility to God and humans due to sin, Christ's ultimate rule over them (ibid) expresses the reign of the Lord over all in the cosmos. This is the Lordship of Christ, which reveals God's tremendous salvation in conquering sin and death at the cross, and now takes place in the Church. (Eph 3:10)
Archangels by tradition guard great persons and, under St. Michael, they protect the Church.
Angels form the lowest rank. They include guardian angels and stand ready to follow where God sends them.

"And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints" (1 Cor. 14:32-33).

An angel is defined as "a supernatural being who mediates between God and mortals. The angels' primary duty is to shuttle back and forth between realms, bringing human prayers to heaven and returning with God's answers." This statement is similar to the Hispanic theory regarding angels as the messengers between God and human beings. The term "angel" comes from the Greek "angelos," which means messenger; in Hebrew the term "malakh" also means messenger, and in Persian the term "angaros" means courier.

Angels are  said to be grouped into nine different Choirs(as noted above). Each Choir is a group of angels with the same mission. The nine Choirs are grouped into three classes. Each class contains three groups. The highest class of angels is known as Angels of Pure Contemplation. The three groups in the Angels of Pure Contemplation are the Seraphim, Cheribim, and the Thrones. They are endowed with the highest degree of knowledge and awareness of God. The middle class of angels is known as Angels of the Cosmos. The Angels of the Cosmos consist of the Dominions, Powers, and the Virtues. The Angels of the Cosmos assign the power and instruction they receive from the Angels of Pure Contemplation. The lowest class of angels is known as the Angels of the World. The three groups consist of the Prinicipalities, Archangels, and Angels. The Angels of the World give the power they receive from the Angels of Cosmos to the earth. According to Janice Connell, here is the ranking of angels into a hierarchy:
The Creation of the Angels
TTTThe angels were created sometime during creation week, after Genesis 1:1. They were not in existence prior to that. It is most likely the angels were created early-on, as they were apparently observers of the work of creation.
The association of the angels with the stars suggests that the angels were created one by one, and each named, as the stars are all named, "He determines the number of the stars, he gives to all of them their names." (Psalm 147:4)
God questioned Job about his knowledge of the creation, "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements --surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God [bene elohim, the angels] shouted for joy?" (Job 38:4-7)
The angels belong to ranks and orders, but they are not related to one another, that is they are not a connected race as we are. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that salvation is not offered to the angels but is reserved for the human family, for the descendants of Adam.
The Four Living Creatures, the Cherubim, correspond one-to-one with the four Gospels with which the New Testament opens. Lion, ox, man, and eagle all symbolize various attributes of God in four-fold symmetry. Since the number "four" is symbolic of the world in scripture, we have in the four cherubim around the throne, a picture of God's government and concern for all aspects of the physical world, and the world-system which we call "human society." The lion corresponds to the Gospel of Matthew---here Jesus is seen as the Lion out of the tribe of Judah, the rightful king, depicting God's kingly sovereignty over Israel and the nations. The ox pictures for us servitude and sacrifice (Mark); The Cherubim's face, like that of a man, corresponds to Luke's Gospel and pictures divine intelligence; and the eagle symbolizes the lofty sovereignty and deity of the Son of God (John's Gospel). The four Gospels are also God's complete message to the descendants of Shem, Ham, Japheth, and to mankind in general, in the same order. The "wheels" of Ezekiel (God's "chariot throne") appear to symbolize divine mobility, (the ability of God to observe, to move and to act, anywhere and at anytime, unrestricted by the limitations of the material world). The entire vision seems to picture for us God's government of human affairs and of nature.
Cherubim and Seraphim
In the hierarchy of the angels as revealed to us in Scripture, the greatest and mightiest are known as the "cherubim," among whom are the "Four Living Creatures." The King James Version of the Bible calls them "the four beasts," but this is a poor translation of the Greek, zoon, which means "living beings." They are remarkable creatures, first described for us in detail by the prophet Ezekiel at the time of the Babylonian captivity of the Jews in July 593 BC
Isaiah may have seen these same great angels earlier in his vision recorded in Isaiah 6. The Hebrew word found in the latter passage is Seraphim, ("burning ones"), rather than Cherubim, thus many Bible scholars treat the Seraphim as a separate, but very high class of angels. Our common notion of "cherubs," as childlike harmless angels with tiny fluttering wings is nothing close to what Scripture relates.Cherubim with whirling, flaming swords which turned every way, to guard the way to the Tree of Life." guarded the gate of access back into Eden after Adam and Eve were expelled, to keep them from eating of the Tree of Life in their fallen condition (Genesis 3:24). In other words, they could not return to fellowship with God except by the way of the cross. Two figures of cherubim with outstretched arms covered the mercy seat which sat on the top of the Ark of the Covenant in the Tabernacle of Moses and later in the Temple of Solomon. The Cherubim were also known as the record keepers of Heaven. They were not described as the cute little "cupidlike" angels depicted by painters, but instead as having four wings, some text also  tell that Cherubrim  had no bodies , and also with many eyes

First Hierarchy (Choir)

Second Hierarchy (Choir)
An ultimate unification with "God the Source". All Orders within this Triad strive to balance or reconcile such opposites as good and bad, matter and spirit and higher and lower, thus risking corruption in doing so.

Third Hierarchy (Choir)
Most exposed and vulnerable to any corrosion of flesh. Angels from these Orders are most well known to us simply because they are most like us.

17th Century Angelology:
Saint Ambrose: First recorded source for the categories of angels from traditions whose origins are lost.
Dionysius the Areopagite: Converted to Christianity by Saint Paul in Athens as referenced in Acts of the Apostles 17:34.
Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite: Neoplatonist who fraudulently wrote under the pseudonym Dionysius the Areopagite(Very little is known about the true identity of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, a fifth or sixth-century mystic Christian writer. He as known as Pseudo-Dionysius because he wrote under the pseudonym "Dionysius the Areopagite," after the man in the Court of the Areopagus converted by St. Paul (see Acts of the Apostles 17,34).  in the 5th or 6th century. In the work The Celestial Hierarchy he used the categories cited by St. Ambrose and created the structure of the hierarchy of angels as referenced above. Attributed with the invention of the word "hierarchy," Lorenzo Valla discovered the forgery in 1497; however, the hierarchy was already imbedded in Catholic theology.
Saint Thomas Aquinas: (Summa Theologica)Created doctrine arguing the necessity of angels and justifying their creation; God created the angels for His own glory. Believed angels are pure spirits, pure intelligences, immaterial. They have perfect knowledge of themselves, but unlike God they do not know the future and cannot see into the souls/hearts of humans. Aquinas based much of his doctrine on and was an avid defender of the work of Pseudo-Dionysius, not knowing the false premise of this work. Some of Milton's contemporaries writing on angelology: Henry More, Robert Fludd, Richard Baxter, Henry Lawrence, Cornelius von Nettesheim Agrippa

Gabriel, the Archangel, name means "Man of God" or "God Has Shown Himself Mightily."
Feastday: September 29
The bearer of God's secret messages to His chosen ones.
Patron of communications & postal workers
It appears first in the prophecies of Daniel in the Old Testament. This Angel announced to Daniel the prophecy of the seventy weeks, (Daniel 9, 21-27). His name also occurs in the apocryphal book of Henoch. He was the Angel who appeared to Zechariah to announce the birth of St. John the Baptizer, (Luke 1, 11), the messenger Angel who announced to Mary that she would bear a Son who would be conceived of the Holy Spirit, Son of the Most High, and the Saviour of the world, (Luke 1, 26), and the angel who buried Moses.Within all of the legends of birthing, Gabriel as been accredited as the angel who selects souls from heaven to be birthed into the material world and spends the nine months as the child is being developed informing the new person of what he or she will need to know on Earth, only to silence the child before birth by pressing his finger onto the child's lips, thus producing the cleft below a person's nose. Gabriel explained to Daniel his vision of a ram and a billy-goat foretelling Alexander the Great's conquest of Persia and a prophecy foretelling the freeing of the Israelites. Gabriel is the angel of the moon who brings man the gift of hope. He is the spirit of truth and the prince of justice. He is the alchemy of psychism, intuition, and receptivity.According to legend, it is Gabriel who will blow the horn announcing the second coming of Christ.
Gabriel is the Governor of the West and the element of Water. Ruler of Monday, psychic gifts, intuition, visions, magick, clairvoyance, scrying, astral travel, herbal medicine, the cycles of women, and female aspects of men. His symbols are the lily and the trumpet, and his stone is the moonstone.Gabriel's candle colors are silver, white and blue.
Gabriel's color energies are white, silver, rose, blue, crystal, and scarlet.
Invoke Gabriel in the west for stronger powers of intuition and psychic gifts.
Fanuel (Phanuel)- On of the 4 angels of the presence, as noted in Ezra IV, where Fanuel is said to be "Uriel under another aspect." But see Ramiel, the Shepherd of Hermes
Michael name signifies "Who is like to God?"
Feastday: September 29
First defender of Jesus Christ in his Sacred Humanity and of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Mystery of the Incarnation.
Associated with the miracles manifesting the almighty power of God with the Blessed Virgin Mary . ( Daniel 10:12 ; 12:1 ; Apoc. 12:7 )
Patron of grocers, mariners, paratroopers, police, and sickness
the war cry of the angels in the battle fought in heaven against Satan and his followers. Holy Scripture describes St. Michael as "one of the chief princes," and as leader of the forces of heaven in their triumph over the powers of hell. He has been especially honored and invoked as patron and protector by the Church from the time of the Apostles. Although he is always called "the Archangel," the Greek Fathers and many others place him over all the Angels - as Prince of the Seraphim.

Michael is the protection Archangel, patron of policemen and bringer of the gift of patience. Angel of careers, courage, achievements, ambitions, motivation, and life tasks. He is the great prince charged to defend the people.

Legend tells that the Cherubim were formed from the tears Michael shed over the sins of the faithful.

God has created the Archangel Michael and put him in charge of nature, rain, snow, thunder, lightning, wind, and clouds. God has appointed a complete creation of angels to assist him and placed them under his command. These angels are countless and no-one other than God knows their number. God has given Michael power to see the entire span of the created universes at once, with no interference of other universes. He knows at all times where he has to send rain, wind, snow, and clouds without effort on his part. The angels who assist him range in size from the hugest size imaginable to man to that of the smallest species living on this earth. They fill the entire atmosphere of every star and planet in every
Their praise to God can be heard by the other angels, by prophets, by saints, and by young children.
In the Catholic Epistle of St. Jude: "When Michael the Archangel, disputing with the devil, contended about the body of Moses", etc. St. Jude alludes to an ancient Jewish tradition of a dispute between Michael and Satan over the body of Moses, an account of which is also found in the apocryphal book on the assumption of Moses (Origen, "De principiis", III, 2, 2). St. Michael concealed the tomb of Moses; Satan, however, by disclosing it, tried to seduce the Jewish people to the sin of hero-worship. St. Michael also guards the body of Eve, according to the "Revelation of Moses" ("Apocryphal Gospels", etc., ed. A. Walker, Edinburgh, p. 647).

Uriel in Hebrew means "fire of God," "flame of God," "light of God," or "sun of God"; Spirit of ministration and peace. He is the Archangel of salvation, viceroy of the sun. Represents Truth.

St. Thomas, following St. Denis, divides the angels into three hierarchies each of which contains three orders. Their proximity to the Supreme Being serves as the basis of this division. In the first hierarchy he places the Seraphim, Sherubim, and Thrones; in the second, the Dominations, Virtues, and Powers; in the third, the Principalities.

SERAPHIM
They were considered the highest order of the Hierarchy of Angels. They are the Angels of Love, Light, and Fire. Seraphim are the closest to God. In the Throne Room, several of the seraphim were described as flying directly above the Throne of God and constantly sing His praise. They are also called "the Burning Ones" because they are aflame with Love. Isaiah 6 in the Old Testament speaks of the Seraphim as "having six wings; two covering the face, two covering the feet, and two were used for flying." They are associated with the color of white.

CHERUBIM

The second highest Order of Angels. Their name stands for "Wisdom" or "one who prays." In the Throne Room they were said to stand next to the Throne of God. They are also depicted on the Ark of the Covenant as its Guardians. Cherubs are the first Angels mentioned in the Bible when two Cherubs are placed by God to guard the gates to Eden with Flaming Swords. "He drove out the man; and at the east of the Garden of Eden he placed the Cherubim, and a Flaming Sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the Tree of Life." Genesis 3:24. The Cherubim were also known as the record keepers of Heaven. They were not described as the cute little "cupid like" angels depicted by painters, but instead as having four wings.

THRONES

The third ranking Order of Angels. They were also known as "Wheels" and "the Many-eyed Ones". They were considered Angels of Justice as they were said to carry out God's decisions. These Angels were often believed to be deployed like charioteers around the Throne of God. They were described in Izekiel 1:13-19 as having four wings and four faces. They sparkled like the color of burnished brass. They had the hands of a man under their wings. Their wings were joined one to the other and they did not turn when they traveled - they all went straight forward. They had four faces. They had the face of a man as well as three other faces on their helmets - that of a lion, an ox, and an eagle. They moved on wheels in the middle of wheels, blue-green in color. Above their heads "the likeness of the firmament," which was the color of crystal, and under this were their wings, two on each side of their bodies. The noise of their wings was "like the noise of great waters."

DOMINATIONS

The fourth ranking Order of Angels. According to Jewish traditions, the success or failure of nations was decided by this Order of Guardian Angels. Dionysius claims that this realm "regulates the Angels." Dominations have been described as wearing long albs, or gowns reaching to their feet, hitched with a golden belt and adorned with a green sole. They carry golden staffs in the right hand and the Seal of God in the left. At other times, they are said to hold an orb or a spectre.

VIRTUES

The fifth ranking Order of Angels. They have been called "The Brilliant or Shining Ones." They were called the Angels of miracles, encouragement, and blessings, and were particularly involved with people struggling with their faith. Virtues have been said to be the chief bestowers of grace and valor. The two Angels at the Ascension of Jesus were traditionally believed to be from the Order of Virtues. Virtues were usually represented in a group.

POWERS

The sixth rankings Order of Angels. Powers have been credited as being the first Order of Angels created by God. In Romans 13:1 it is written that "The Soul is subject to the Powers." It is their duty to protect the world from the infiltration of demons. They protect our souls these evil beings and act as ministers of God who avenge evil in the world. It was also believed that at death, the Powers guided our transition to Heaven.

PRINCIPALITIES

The seventh ranking Order of Angels. The Principalities were described as the Angels who protect religious. They were also considered to be the guardians over the nations and the leaders of the world. It was from this Order that the Angel who aided David in his task of slaying Goliath was thought to have come. Principalities have been described as being dressed in soldier's uniforms with golden girdles.

ARCHANGELS

The eighth ranking Order of Angels. These were considered to be the Angels in command of ministering to humans. They are also the most widely known Order of Angels, since the only Angels mentioned by name in the Bible (Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael) come from this Order. They carry Gods messages to humans and are ultimately in command of God's Armies of Angels who are constantly in spiritual warfare with the forces of evil and the fallen angels. Michael was almost universally believed to be their leader. The number of Archangels usually considered to be associated with our system of worlds is seven, as in the Seven Angels who stand before God in Revelation 8:2, which is often interpreted to mean the Seven Archangels. The Seven Beloved Archangels are Michael, Jophiel, Chamuel, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, and Zadkiel.

ANGELS

The ninth ranking Order of Angels. Angels are the Order closest to humanity. The word angel derives from the Greek "angelos" meaning "messenger."

                                         Notes of Interest
Yes, God does laugh. Psalm 37:13; 52:6; and 59:8 also bears this out.

We are created in His image, and likewise have the capacity to laugh.

The Bible in Ecclesiastes 3:4 says that there is a time to weep and a time to laugh.

Ecc. 7:2-6 cautions us to place a proper balance between laughter and sorrow
The Four Archangels in Charge of Earth
There are four angels and their innumerable retinues in charge of this world.
The first is Gabriel and his armies. He is in charge of soldier-angels and revelation. Gabriel insures victory and is responsible for the extinction of nations: human, animal, vegetal, or others, when God wills it.
The second is Michael and his armies, in charge of rain and vegetation. He conveys sustenance to nurture mankind.
The third is `Azra'il the angel of death and his assistants. They are in charge of seizing the souls of those who die.
The fourth is Israfil and his assistants, in charge of the Hour of the Day of Judgment.
When the earth has passed away God will order these angels to bring forth their scrolls and they will bring them. Then God will order them to open the Book of Life. They will then find that their scrolls are the same as it.

No evil shall befall you, nor shall affliction come near your tent, for to His Angels God has given command about you, that they guard you in all your ways. Upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.

In John Milton's long poem 'Paradise Lost' (1667), Satan himself is a main character; and the angels Raphael, Gabriel, and Michael play prominent roles.
In Dante's 'Divine Comedy' (1321?) angels appear as both messengers and guardians, and Satan is vividly portrayed frozen in a block of ice.

Angelolatry - The veneration or worship of angels. (*in Judo-Christian it is Idolatry a sin to worship angels)

Angelology - The study or science of angels,is a rich, complex subject. The three major Western Spiritual traditions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam - have all dealt with Angels, although research suggests that the roots go far back to the civilisations of Sumeria and Babylon. Even now, in the Twenty-first century, new ideas are being discussed and new perspectives are opening up. As we humans grow and evolve, so our perspective on Angels changes.
* Beware of false teachers and text. In the past twenty years there had been over 4000 new angels added, all whom add them ,say they where by anglic wisdom, or by channeling.(yeah right)

Angelophany - The visible or otherwise tangible manifestation of angels to human beings.

Major Definers, Defenders and Contributors
Plato and Aristotle: Although neither made claim to personified spiritual beings, they both ascribed moving intelligences to the spheres of heaven and argued that the perfectly ordered structure and motion of the heavens was evidence of intelligence in celestial bodies.

Early Ideas

Let's look at the word "Angel". It comes from the Greek word angelos which means messenger, and may be related to an old Persian word angairos (courier). Possibly, both of these derive from a Sanskrit word, angiras or Divine Spirit. The Hebrew word - which you will find in the Old Testament - is malakh, and the Arabic word is malak. Both of these mean messenger, too. This was the original idea about Angels - that they were God's messengers. Gabriel (who certainly got around) is a good example - he taught Tobias about Healing, announced Jesus' birth to Mary, and dictated the Koran to Muhammad.

We can trace the origins of Angelology back as far as about the Seventh Century BCE At that time the Jews were held captive in Babylon, and adopted certain ideas of their captors. One of these involved a minor deity who protected people against the forces of evil. The Jews placed themselves under his protection, and took him into their belief system as the Archangel Michael. Their Old Testament has many examples of Angelic interaction with humans in it. Most are fairly typical - two Angels rescuing Lot and his family from Sodom and various Angels visiting Abraham, for example - but there are some other episodes which show that even then that Angels had larger duties (Cherubim guarding the Garden of Eden; an Angel of the Lord smiting the Egyptians' first-born sons; and a number of Angels mating with human women). Jewish religion and mysticism have always found room for Angels, and it is really from this source that Angelology has grown.

Christianity followed on from Judaism, and Islam (chronologically) came last. All are really fruits of the same tree, and all have to some degree dealt with Angels. We shall follow the (largely) Christian branch, as this has led to Angelology as we know it today. Christianity originated in the Middle East, and at one time looked as though it would remain a small, insignificant cult. However, in the hands of Paul (who, for all his faults, knew about PR) it spread widely throughout the world. At one time it was firmly established as far East as China and throughout a large part of North-west Africa. It had the largest influence in Europe, though, when the Emperor Constantine adopted it as the main - official - faith of the Roman Empire in the Fourth Century CE (325, at the Conference of Nicea, to be exact). Even today there are arguments about what, exactly, was adopted as a faith and how pure a form of Christianity it was, but these need not concern us. What matters is that now Christianity was able to develop as a religion. Early Christians portrayed Angels as fairly androgynous young people, not recognisably male nor female. If we go back in time to Chaldea and the early Mesopotamian civilisations, we find that if an entity was portrayed with wings, then that entity was thought of as being in some way sacred. One school of thought holds that as this idea was taken up by the Greeks, and then the Romans it must have influenced the early Christian Church (this argument is based on the fact that Christian iconography only portrays winged Angels after about the Second Century CE). However in Judaic Scripture, Angels were mostly thought of as having wings, unless they appeared in human form. Angels have always had wings - we just haven't always noticed them!!

In the Middle Ages, Angelology was felt to be a proper field of study for Natural Scientists - today, these would be both scientists and philosophers. All the big questions were asked - are Angels eternal, immortal, both or neither? (Answer - Immortal, but not eternal); can they have material bodies? (Answer - No); and, of course, how many Angels can dance on the head of a pin (Answer - it depends on how big the pin is....the serious answer is that as Angels are beings of pure light, the number is infinite).

                    Work Those Angels
Philosophical speculation is all well and good but some people wanted to find out just what an Angel is capable of. We are talking about a time when "New Age" ideas were accepted without question - Doctors, for example, had to study music and astrology as part of their training; well-educated priests tended to have a working knowledge of what we would call magic today. There was a basic belief that the only way to understand the Universe as a whole was to comprehend how the various parts were related, and much effort was dedicated to drawing up lists of correspondences (here's an example: the Roman God of War was Mars; the Planet Mars is red; astrologically Mars governs Tuesday; Iron turns red when it rusts; another name for the God Mars was Aries. His symbolic beast was a Ram. Ok, so Mars (the planet and the Deity), iron, war, Tuesday, rams, and the colour red are all related). Scholars dedicated their lives to making up lists of these correspondences. Celibacy obviously did strange things to their heads.... Anyway, from here it was a short step to wondering if whether influencing one part of the universe could cause an effect elsewhere (if you destroyed your enemy's fingernails, then would it destroy your enemy?). Suddenly sympathetic magic - known to Mystics, shamans and the Clergie for years - was respectable (but only legal if you were rich or socially well-connected). Then someone had another thought - Angels are intermediaries between God and Humanity, they carry out God's orders, but still have their own personal responsibility for worldly affairs (health, weather and luck for example): if you can persuade or compel an Angel to do your bidding, then surely you can alter the Universe to favour you and your desires? In many ways, what followed was at once the Golden Age of Angelology and the Dark Age. Much valuable research was carried out on the Inner and Outer Planes (even today, the majority of known Angel names are known from this period of time), but at the same time a lot of work with Demons was done on the Left Hand Path. Still, we owe a debt to the medieval scholars, as they discovered much of what we know today. (* However this  must be noted..That using the Heavely Angels with idols is  considered a sin..No if's ands or Buts )

                  There's Always One.....
While nearly everybody was trawling through Hebrew, Arabic and Greek manuscripts trying to discover lost knowledge, John Dee was off doing his own thing. Linguist, mathematician, geographer and spy for Elizabeth 1st (he was the original 007), Dr Dee (1527-1608) was drawn through philosophy to studying magic. The story (which involves a heavy-drinking medium and wife-swapping) is entertaining, but it led Dee to make contact with Angelic intelligences who taught him a new language - Enochian - and a powerful, complex system of magic which could only be worked using this language. Because the system is so difficult to comprehend, it languished in obscurity until the Twentieth Century, when the Order of the Golden Dawn revived it. Gerald and Betty Schueler are perhaps the main exponents of Enochian Magic today, and we shall examine one aspect of it in greater depth when studying Healing with Angels.

The Celestial Hierarchy
From the moment the humans first encountered Angels, we made attempts to classify them, although this seems to matter more to us than it does to the Angels themselves! They have been organised according to what we understand their function to be, according to what time day, or zodiac sign they govern - if you can think of a category, it has probably been explored. Sad to say, nearly everyone who has tried this has come up with their own answers and ideas. These days Angelologists tend mainly to use two schemes, one called the Orders of the Celestial Hierarchy and the other based on Elemental attributions. Even here there is room for discussion - there are over a dozen different ways of organising the Hierarchy! This one - the best-known - is accredited to Psuedo-Dionysius (the name used by a group of early Christian writes who wanted to believe that their works had been written by a mystic called Dionysius the Aeropagite).

Seraphim
The Burning Ones. Beings with four faces and six wings each. Angels of Love, Light and Fire, they surround God's Throne and sing his praises eternally (this is the Trisagion). Their Fire is the Divine Fire of Love, whence comes all Creation, and they purify our lives and intentions. Their Chief is Seraphiel, assisted by Metatron, Jehoel and Michael. Their name comes from Ser (a Heavenly Being) and Rapha ("He who heals"). Some researchers add that there is another, temporary Order of Angels created at this level - the Ephemeras. These are created each day at dawn to sing the Trisagion, after which they return to the Divine Light (if you have seen the film City of Angels, you will have a pretty clear understanding of this Order).

Cherubim (Kerubim)
The Holy Living Creatures. Like the Seraphim, Kerubim ("One who intercedes or prays" - kerub in Hebrew, karibu in Akkadian) have four wings and four faces each. The four faces are those of an eagle, a lion, an ox and a man - iconography which appears in Christianity associated with the Four Evangelists, and later on as part of Trump 21 (The World or The Universe) in Tarot. Their Chiefs are Cherubiel and Gabriel. They are the first Angels to appear in the Old Testament (Genesis Chapter 3, verse 24), guarding the Garden of Eden with a fiery sword. They are God's Charioteers, keepers of the Akashic Records and Guardians of he Stars. As well as this they serve as the voice of Divine Wisdom, overseeing our Spiritual evolution.

Thrones (also called Galgallim or Ophanim)

The Merkabah. These are the Chariots of God, driven by the Cherubim. They are the "many-eyed wheels" spoken of in the Book of Ezekiel (Chapter 11, verses 9 to 22). Their Chiefs are Ofaniel, Rikbiel and Raphael. According to Merkabah tradition, they are the medium through which God's justice is visited upon humans - they serve to remind us to purify ourselves so as to be able to rise both Spiritually and physically towards the Divine Presence.

Dominations (Dominions, Lordships or Lords; Kuriotes, Kyriotes; Hashmallim)
Governed by Hashmal and Zadkiel, these Angels have no recorded description - but as they usually appear wrapped within a bright-burning fire, this is not surprising! The Dominations regulate the behaviour of other Angels. They are channels for God's mercy and righteousness.

Virtues
This group of Angels is governed by Michael, Peliel, Barakiel and Usiel (Lucifer, too, began as a Virtue). Taking their orders from the Dominations, they bring God's grace to humans and inspire us with courage.

Powers (Potentates, Authorities, Dynamis)
Their Chiefs are Samael, Camael (or Kemuel) and Erotosi. Angels of the Order of Powers work to thwart the efforts of Demons. They operate on both the Material and Spiritual Planes, not just combating evil and chaos but also acting as Guides to lost or stuck souls. If you are undertaking Angelic Healing to clear a person or place of negative influences; or if you are carrying out Rescue work then call upon the Powers for help.

Principalities
Principalities look after the fate of the Nations of the Earth and the Leaders of human society, with whose actions, destinies  they are concerned. Their Chiefs are Requel, Hanael (or Haniel), Cerviel, Nisroc and Suroth.

Archangels
Although nowadays "Archangel" is a broadly used term, they do have a specific identity and range of duties. In the Christian belief system, Archangels are God's Generals, leading the fight against Satan. They also supervise the Angels and liaise directly between humans and God - tradition holds that they plead on our behalf for God's mercy. Archangels can be called upon to help us find and make progress on our Spiritual Path. If it is a necessary part of our journey to enlightenment, they may even intervene directly in the affairs of the material world. Christianity recognises seven major Archangels - Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, Uriel, Raguel, Haniel and Seraquel. Islam has four Archangels - Jibril (Gabriel), Mika'il (Michael), Azrel and Israfel; while Judaism lists a total of ten major Archangels - Metatron and Shekinah (a male-female pair), Michael, Haniel, Raphael, Gabriel, Ratziel, Tzaphkiel, Tzadkiel and Camael.

We generally work with four main Archangels today: Michael (who dresses in Roman armour and has a red and green cloak) - he carries a sword and a pair of scales (both symbols of truth and justice); Gabriel, who dresses in blue and orange and who carries a lily to symbolise purity (although modern magic and Tarot have replaced the lily with a cup or a chalice); Raphael, dressed in yellow and violet - Raphael holds a staff, symbolising wisdom; and finally Uriel, dressed in brown, olive green and black - the colours of the Earth - who holds a book or a scroll, the symbols of Divine Law (again, these have been replaced in modern times by a disk

Angels
Often confused with Archangels these days. Of all the Celestial Hierarchy, Angels are closest to humans, and the beings with whom we are most likely to be able to make contact. Swedenborg suggests that beyond the Divine Unity, Archangels are Group Souls, that each Archangelic name is a description of an individual manifestation of an Archangelic Group consciousness or frequency, and that each Angel is an  individual expression of a specific harmonic related to an Archangelic consciousness - a sort of Spiritual Spokes Being.

Fallen Angels
Due to the influence on Medieval Christianity, Angelology sometimes confuses the Fallen Angels with Demons, even though there is a Spiritual and a practical difference between them. The old story of Fallen Angels - Lucifer defying God, etc. etc. - comes from Christian legend. You don't find it in the Judaic Old Testament, and even in The (Christian) Apocalypse of John - commonly called - Revelations there is only mention of "..The dragon and his angels..." (Chapter 12, verse 7) and "...Satan and his angels..." (Chapter 12, verse 9) without any further explanation. Genesis Chapter 6 recounts that "..the Sons of God saw how beautiful were these daughters of men, and took them as wives...", while the Book of Enoch tells how the Angel Jeqon "...led astray (all) the sons of God and brought them down to the earth and there led them astray through the daughters of men." (Enoch Chapter 69, verses 4 and 5). It appears that the Fall was not so much a rebellion as it was a descent into the flesh - if you've seen the film City of Angels, then you'll understand exactly what was supposed to of happened. Which story is correct is more than just a simple matter of theological dispute, or Biblical exegesis. In the first, Christian, instance there is a definite aura of evil about the Fallen Angels - they are rebellious, they are agents of Chaos - while in the second there is almost an innocence, a love for humanity carried perhaps slightly too far. The first story is a suitable explanation for the origin of Demons (who are wholly evil), the second would explain Fallen Angels (who retain a spark of their Angelic essence).

Demons are a different matter. It is interesting to note that had Biblical translation happened differently, Angels would have been Demons: when the Bible was being translated from Hebrew into Greek, there were two possible translations of malakh. One was angelos ("a messenger" - not necessarily a Divine messenger, though) and the other was daimon which, in the Greek language, signified what we today would probably call a Spirit Guide (although daimones were neither wholly good nor wholly evil): Christian belief necessitated that there could not be a left-hand influence associated with malakh in translation, so angelos won out (although St Paul, a fluent Greek speaker, preferred exousia, which translates as "virtue"). From daimon, we derive our word "demon".

Whatever term you use to describe these entities, they are wholly negative and spring from undifferentiated Chaos rather than from Divine Unity. One school of Jewish mystics and philosophers - Kabalists - created a diagram of the universe which is called the Tree of Life, which maps out the planes of existence between God and Man in a series of Paths and Spheres, and which includes Angels every step of the way. Realising that everything has an opposite and there is necessarily a balance, they discussed a realm of existence called Qlippoth ("Shells") - a kind of chaotic, negative Plane where everything good and wholesome is mirrored by something evil and chaotic. This Plane was not created, it merely exists as balance, and it is from here that Demons originate. ( *All information on this page is just that and does NOT reflect on the personal beliefe system of the  aurthor)

Passing the River is yet a third magic alphabet based on Hebrew that was included by Cornelius  Agrippa in Book III, Chapter XXX of his Occult Philosophy.  Barrett derived the alphabet from Agrippa (along with much of the text of Agrippa's book) and presented it in his Magus. Unfortunately  Agrippa wrote nothing at all concerning Passing the River.

The Malachim Alphabet was given by Agrippa in Book III, Chapter XXX of his Occult Philosophy and copied from this source by Barrett in his Magus. Agrippa  had little to say about it, other than that its name means "of Angels or  Regal." Like the Celestial Alphabet, it is based on the twenty-two  Hebrew letters.

The Theban Alphabet is supposed to have been created by the magician Honorious (supposedly Pope Honorious), author of the grimoire known as The Sworn Book of Honorious, where, curiously enough, this alphabet does not appear.

"See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. Be attentive to him and heed his voice." - Exodus 23.20

The 7 Heaven's
This section of the angel’s story has been given different names by different theologians.  It has been called:

      - The seven heavens and the 7 hells
      - The 7 celestial mansions and the 7 palaces
         of darkness
      - The 7 heavens and the seven earths.

In fact angels have no religion as we know it ...
their existence precedes every religious system
that has ever existed on earth."

Odds and Ends
seconaphim- (se cahn' a fim). The ministering angels of the superuniverses; children of the Reflective Spirits assigned to the headquarters of each of the superuniverses. The seconaphim are also retentive personalities, acting as the living records of everything of true spiritual value in their domains

Four Kinds of Prayer:
1.For material benefits and help
2.For virtues, grace and healing
3.For others  intercessory prayer
4.For illumination and divine realization
All these have their roots in feeling and desire, but the fourth type brings us to the point where prayer can end and meditation begin. Meditation differs from prayer in that it is primarily an orientation of the mind and brings about realizations and recognitions that become formulated knowledge. Meditation is not an abstract activity as it is frequently considered to be. It entails concentration, reflection, understanding, a clear conception and formulation of ideas and thoughts, and then consideration and visualization of ways and means of bringing them to outer expression. While prayer will always be a foundational approach for many of us, the present-day development of intellect demands a more mental form of inner action: meditation of a creative nature and having a positive and scientific method of working with spiritual laws.
Affirmation is a method that fills this need and includes both prayer and meditation.
Invocation is a synthesis of these three; the simultaneous, combined activity of
Meditation (mind)
Prayer (feeling)
Affirmation (will)
It is this synthesis that gives invocation a potency as yet unrealized. Invocation means "calling down", or "calling into". It is a demand, an appeal to something higher, asking for help or intervention. The same can be said of prayer, but there is an important difference between the two. In its specific sense, prayer is the "heart" approach and involves the use of the feeling function. Invocation, on the other hand, is an inner action that includes and combines the use of all our inner functions. It is a simultaneous activity of the mind (meditation), of feeling (prayer), of the imagination (visualization), and of the will (affirmation). It is obvious that this comprehensive and synthesized action of our whole being, when rightly carried out, gives invocation a potency incomparably greater and richer than the separate use of any single inner activity.

The origin of angels. Angels are created beings (Ps. 148: 2-5). Hence, angels are not to be worshipped (Col. 2: 8). Angels were created as free moral agents. Some remained loyal to God, others rebelled (2 Pet. 2: 4).

The design and purpose of angels. As seen, angels are primarily God's messengers (Matt. 1: 20). Angels also minister or serve. Speaking of angels the Hebrews writer wrote, "Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?" (Heb. 1: 14.) Angels have also served as instruments (though whom God has worked, Gen. 19: 13).

Similarities between angels and man. Both angels and man were created by God (Ps. 148: 2-5, Gen. 1, 2). Hence, both are subservient to God (Heb. 1: 6, Matt. 4: 10). Angels and man are also both free moral agents (freedom of choice in service, 2 Pet. 2: 4, 6; Gen. 2, 3). At times, angels have resembled man physically (Gen. 18: 1-22).

Dissimilarities between angels and man. Angels are now superior to man (2 Pet. 2: 11). Angels are genderless (Matt. 22: 30). In this vein, angels do not marry or procreate (Matt. 22: 30). Moreover, angels are spirit beings and are not heirs of God as man is (Heb. 1: 14; I Pet. 1: 12, Rom. 8: 17).

Angelic organization. The term "archangel" is indicative of rank (I Thes. 4: 16). We read of cherubim and seraphim (Gen. 3: 24, Isa. 6: 2, 3). The Cherubim, apparently high ranking angels, are presented as winged (Ex. 25: 20). In this angelic hierarchy, there is also what is called the "theophany," perhaps the highest in rank. The theophany, while an angel, assumes the "position" of God himself (Ex. 3: 2-6). He is called "the angel of the Lord" (Ex. 3: 2). The archangel, cherubim, seraphim, and the "theophany" all appear to be over angels in general.

Angelic activity. Angels were the agents in the destruction of the cities of the plain (Gen. 19), an angel destroyed the Assyrian army (2 Kgs. 19), and angels were associated with the birth of Jesus (Matt. 2: 13, ch. 1). The "angel of the Lord" rolled back the stone from the door of Jesus' grave (Matt. 28: 2), and two were present at Jesus' ascension (Acts 1: 10). Angels comforted Jesus and Paul (Matt. 4: 11, Acts 27: 23 ff.). Angels shall accompany Jesus in the Judgment and shall separate the saved and the lost (Matt. 13: 36 ff.).

Holy Laughter: The participants collapse in almost uncontrollable laughter and this is supposed to be a sign of the Spirit of God working in spiritual renewal.

Foxhole Salvation ; situation where it seemed the only answer was to call out to God for help. God answered their cry and so they decide there is a God that loves them, they have heard about Jesus, so they ask Him to be their Savior. Maybe they were in jail, they had a terrible sickness, they were living on the street, they went through a divorce, they truly were "under fire" and needed the protection of God.

Lent- The significant rite of the beginning of Lent is the signing with the ashes on Ash Wednesday. The sign of the cross is traced upon the forehead with the words, "Remember Thou, O soul, that thy body is dust and unto dust it shall return." These words signify a release from the identification of the self with the mortal and corruptible body and personality. A detachment from our conventional identification with our mortal shell can result in an altered state of consciousness where our bodies can communicate to us a spiritual reality and we can develop in actuality a more caring attitude toward it.  St. Francis often referred to his mortal frame as his humble and dutiful "donkey" that  bore him through this life, like the donkey that bore the blessed Virgin to Bethlehem.

SLAIN IN THE SPIRIT: is when the Spirit comes upon you it will overcome you with power, slaying you. Today this has become the common denominator of the Spirits presence with power and is sought after as proof of receiving the anointing. a person loses all motor control over their body and falls to the floor or ground. The context for it is almost always a revival meeting or a prayer-and-praise service, though it has been known to happen at religious music concerts and programs.

Revelation: is when God gives your Heart an understanding of a certain Biblical Truth. We all need Revelation Knowledge.Rev. knowledge is when you are reading the Bible and a verse leaps off the page, hits you between the eyes, and God says, "This is for you right now." These are precious experiences for the believer. However, for many, they do not happen often enough.

Impartation: Imparting the anointing is a common practice among Charismatic. The practice got its origins from earlier revivalists such as Maria Woodworth-Etter and Aimee Sample McPherson. It got to be commonplace during the New Order of the Latter Rain. During this alleged move of God it was taught that spiritual gifts, callings, healing, and delivering power could be transmitted through the laying-on-of-hands. This concept was vigorously fought by the formal leadership of the Assemblies of God. At that point the AOG denied that it was possible to impart these things through the laying on of hands ( Latter Rain doctrines ).

Anak or Anakim: These were the giants that the spies found when they went to check out the promise land in Num: 13:33. It is very interesting to note that the stature and formidable nature of the Anakim were almost proverbial. They were taken as a standard for comparison to stress the size of such other peoples as the Emim (Deut: 2:10) and the Rephamin (Deut: 2:21), and there was a saying, "Who can stand before the sons of Anak?" (Deut: 9:2). In the account of the Promised Land brought back by the ten faint-hearted spies, emphasis was laid on the fact that the Anakim were there (Deut: 1:28). It was even claimed that they were descendants of the Nephilim, who were of the sons of Anak, and the spies felt like grasshoppers besides them (Num: 13:33).

Rods: Rods the mysterious life form that seems to only be visible in a photo. All over the world a here to fore unknown life form seems to be revealing itself, thanks to modern technology. No one knows exactly what it is, although many theories abound. It is a cylindrical shaped object with beating wings. They appear to be intelligent flying organisms that fly around us all the time but are too fast to be seen by the naked eye. The most famous rods ever filmed are probably the ones from the  cave divers in Mexico. They look like cylinders with flaps and appear to be intelligent as they avoid birds and humans.

SPIRIT CHILDREN: children who passed over and, according to trance accounts, are growing to maturity on the other side. Child mediums often claim spirit children as their playmates. Florence Marryat writes in her There is No Death of Bessie Williams' little girl, Mabel: "I have watched her playing at ball with an invisible child, and have seen the ball thrown, arrested half-way in the air, and then tossed back again as if a living child had been Mab's opponent." According to the authoress, when a still-born baby is launched upon the other side she is delivered  over to the nearest relative of its parent to be named and brought up.

SPIRIT HYPOTHESIS  the theory that the intelligence which directs the phenomena of the medium is a disembodied spirit. It is the only simple theory that covers every phase of manifestations. It is also the one which is being consistently put forward by the invisible communicators.

Rebirthing-Reliving the traumas of birth to provide new insight and healing.

Mysticism/Mystic-Union with the absolute, God, or the power behind the universe. Meditation and contemplation are the means for attaining that state of transcendence. Alchemy-Transformation of base metals into gold. More importantly, it refers to the spiritual transformation of the human being into an enlightened being.ALCHEMY: THE ART OF TRANSFORMATION

Archetype-Primordial images, universal aspects of the unconscious, recurring in each generation across cultures. The concept was developed by Carl Jung.PRINCIPLES OF JUNGIAN SPIRITUALITY

Astral bodies, planes, travel and projection-The astral body is the 'double' of the human body and is said to provide the body with its consciousness. Conscious separation of the astral body from the physical is known as astral travel, or, more commonly, as an out-of-body experience or astral projection. It is to the astral plane that the astral body goes and this is also the one of the first spheres that the astral body reaches after death. OUT OF BODY EXPERIENCES

Devils' advocate - person who presents, usually for the sake of argument, an opposing view which he does not himself hold
Translation from the Latin advocatus diaboli, a theological term used in the Roman Catholic church for the official given the duty of arguing against the proposed beatification of a dead person during the formal deliberation of the matter, in order to ensure that the case is examined from all sides.

Shaman/Shamanism-One who is able to serve as an intermediary between humans and the spirit worlds. Can be a sorcerer, magician, healer or prophet, and can enter trance states at will.

Ecstacy-Ecstasy: is a state of emotion  or altered state of consciousness, that can be so intense that the person experiencing it is carried beyond rational thought and self control.  A state of ecstasy is associated with feelings of intense, pleasure, joy or delight.  Sometimes a state of ecstasy is associated with a trance-like state of rapture and frenzy, associated with prophetic or mystic exaltation.  For example the state can be accompanied by feelings of the mind being elevated above the reach of ordinary impressions. In the state of ecstasy there is often the influence of overpowering emotion; 'an extraordinary elevation of the spirit, as when the soul, unconscious of sensible objects, is supposed to contemplate heavenly mysteries.'  Generally it is a state of being carried away by overwhelming emotion.

Celestial Light : according to belief, is the sacred light of all ages, The celestial light was but one of the seven precious gifts enjoyed by Adam before the fall and to be granted to man again only in the Messianic time.  It is also the halo emanating from certain visions of a mystical nature.  However it can only be observed by those who have lived ascetic lives, and when life has almost left the body.  also check out  Angels, Angel Magic, Archangels, Celestial, Celestial Bodies, Celestial Hierarchy, Dionysius the Areopagite, Fallen Host &  Grigori.

To pay the  Devil-trouble as the consequence of an act
The earliest appearance of this expression has to do with paying the Devil as part of a bargain. The medieval legend of the man who sold his soul to the Devil is best known from the later Faust stories, notably the dramatised version by Marlowe (1594): his Dr Faustus enjoys 24 years during which Mephistopheles provides whatever he asks for, but he has to pay his soul to the Devil at the end of them. However, the idea of making a pact with the Devil is much older and of Jewish origin: Christ, for example, is offered such a pact in Matthew, 4:1-11).
There is a later expression, the devil to pay and no hot pitch, which is nautical. It may be a punning extension of the earlier phrase or an entirely separate one devil is a seam for caulking; pay is an obsolete verb meaning 'cover with pitch' (tar). The process is explained in Between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Death Birds : are mysterious creatures that are in fact a variety of bat that has a penchant for human blood.  This is how they attained their name death birds.  The archeologist Byron de Prorok is said to have learned of this phenomenon in 1936, while traveling through southern Ethiopia.  The death birds were said to inhabit Devil's Cave - a cursed cavern near Lekempti.  It was here that de Prorok encountered the bats.  ( also check out  zooform Phenomena.)

chthonic:  Of the earth or the underworld; an infernal or powerful elemental force.

Dead as a door-nail
Door-nails were large-headed nails with which doors were studded for strength or ornamentation. There have been ingenious conjectures as to why one should be particularly 'dead', including the suggestion that a door-nail would become worn out if it was used - there is no evidence that it was - as the nail on which the door-knocker was struck.
The best explanation is from a different meaning of door-nail, that of a door-fastener, a beam of wood placed across the inside of a door, held in place by brackets, and called a nail because it fastened. It was rigid and therefore invited comparison with a corpse.

Eleventh hour - the last minute
In the Bible, Matthew (20:1-16) tells a parable in which the doctrine of grace is explained in a story of the labourers in the lord's vineyard who were all paid the same for their work whether they had been working all day, or had only started in the eleventh hour - the last hour of the Roman working day. This biblical use means the expression has been in the language from the earliest records. It was given further resonance in the 20th century when at the end of the First World War the Armistice was signed on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month of 1918. Nowadays it is generally used without reference to these but simply as an alternative to 'last minute' or last ditch.

Feather in one's cap - achievement one can take pride in
A reference to the plumes worn in the helmets of knights as a sign of their distinction. The frequent attribution of the expression to American Indian custom is suspect: the Prince of Wales' three white ostrich feathers, for instance, have been known since the Battle of Crécy (1346), when the Black Prince is said to have won the right to display them after the death there of the king of Bohemia (whose crest they previously were). The expression has been metaphorical in English since the 16th century, which makes an American origin unlikely.

Abracadabra - Also a magician's spell or incantation and a mystic word used as a charm against aches and pains. It made its appearance in a Latin poem ( 2nd century AD) by Q. Severus Sammonicus and has been said to comprise the initials of the hebrew words for 'Father, Son and Holy Ghost', but is more likely to be related to a Greek word for a diety.

Achilles' heel/tendon-In Homer's Iliad (c. 8th century BC), the story of the seige of Troy, Achilles is the great Greek hero whose principal exploit is the killing of Hector, commander of the Trojan army. According to legend he was as an infant immersed by his mother Thetis in the Styx, a river of the underworld, to make him invulnerable. However, the heel by which she held him was untouched by the waters and remained vulnerable. Paris, the Trojan prince, knew this and so was able to kill him at the siege by shooting him in the heel with a poisoned arrow (though this part of the story is not in Homer).
A person's Achilles' heel is therefore his vulnerable spot or fatal weakness - his only one, strictly speaking. The Achilles' tendon, between heel and calf, is often strained by athletes and takes its name from its position and this vulnerability.

Apocalypse - an event of great moment and disaster, comparable to the end of the world
Literally, a revelation or uncovering. The word (from Greek) was originally a theological term for the revelation of the future granted in prophetic visions to St John the Divine on the island of Patmos and set out by him in Revelation (about 97 AD), the final book in the Bible and sometimes called the Apocalypse. The modern meaning comes from the fact that the book describes the final great battle between good and evil in the world, with visions of the Last Judgement of humanity by God.

Every visible thing in this world is put in charge of an angel.
